The day after Christmas my sister-in-law, Kelly, and I went to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller and Kristen Wiig. The movie really resonated with me because of where I am in life. Let me explain.
Walter Mitty is a guy who’s good at his job but is a background character in his own life. When faced with situations where/when he could take control, he zones out. Each time he zones out, he imagines himself as the main character in his life, someone who takes control of the situation. When he snaps out of his daydream, he’s still Walter Mitty.
As the movie progresses, Walter takes control of his life and instead of having adventures only in his daydreams he begins to experience adventure in real time. I don’t want to give too much away just in case you plan on seeing the movie.
About halfway through the movie, I got an AHA moment! I felt like the universe literally slapped me upside the head saying ‘Girl, you have some serious Walter Mitty-like tendencies! Stop daydreaming and make it happen!’
Here’s the thing – for most of my adult life I have been playing a supporting role *NO COMPLAINTS* as wife, mom, etc. Was that because I chose to be in that role and push my dreams to the back or was I using that as an excuse to not try and fully realize my dreams?
Stop Dreaming – Start Living
It doesn’t matter. What matters is that I’m not going to dream about what my life could be anymore. I’m going to make it happen. Right here. Right now.
What’s next? I’m not really sure but I do know that my blogging has brought several opportunities my way. I’ve gotten to partner with local food purveyors, cover grocery store openings and enjoy sponsored travel events. I’m even pitching a TV show! I am pursuing my dream of transitioning my hobby to a career. I’m not sure what will come of it but I can’t be afraid to try.
I’m not a big fan of resolutions but I can say, with confidence, that I plan on having a Walter Mitty-free 2014!
