Hat, $20. Shoes, $40. Sundress. . . priceless

I think you can live well without spending a lot of money. Sure, it takes a little more time and planning to check your supermarket’s flyer for weekly specials or clip (and use!) coupons for products you use the most.

The money saved on groceries or shopping at an outlet can be saved or used for the occasional splurge, right?

Well, that’s my philosophy. I’m careful with the way I spend my money, so when I’m on vacation I don’t think twice about spending money on something I really want.

Last year we visited my mother-in-law, The Duchess, in Naples Florida. She and I have an annual ritual. We go bathing suit shopping together at The Beach House of Naples . Then we join my husband and The Captain (The Duchess’ beau) for lunch.

On our last visit I was on a mission! I didn’t need a bathing suit. I wanted a beach hat and a coverup. I was looking for something that looked more like a dress, something that I could wear from beach or boat to dinner – without looking like I was wearing a coverup. I knew The Beach House would have just what I was looking for.

We got to the shop and we were in luck! Our favorite sales woman was there. She remembered us and after describing what I was looking for, she started grabbing things for me to try on. I was psyched. I tried on several items and with The Duchess’ approval we settled on “the one”.

I was thrilled! I had two beach hats and the perfect beach coverup/sundress. Our sales woman began ringing up the sale as I chatted happily with The Duchess. The sales woman said, “That will be $300.” I almost fell over. $300. $300!!! The two hats were about $40. The dress was over $200.

And you know what, I bought it. I was on vacation. It fit perfectly. I got excellent service and would do it again. In fact, I have every intention of going to that shop again this year and would recommend it to anyone.

Hat - $20, Shoes - $40, Dress - priceless!

Have you ever spent more on an item than you would ever admit? Come on, you know you have. Tell me all about it!
