Since this madness began, I’ve made several hundred masks and I found one I really, really, really like. It’s the 3D mask and here’s why I like the 3D Mask so much. I never in a million years thought that I would ever wear a mask out in public. Masks have always been associated with committing a criminal act. But when the pandemic began, not only did I begin wearing a mask, I also started making them!
When I started making masks, the patterns I used weren’t tapered. They were square and gathered at the sides to accommodate your nose and chin. They did the job but I still felt like I was fiddling around with them quite a bit to keep them in place over my nose and mouth.
Then I stumbled upon the 3D Mask (and the angels sang!). This mask is easy to make, requires only one pattern piece AND STAYS PUT! There are lots of tutorials out there but the two that I like the most are both made by Marcy Harriell. I’ve been following her oonaballoona blog since 2019 because I love the maxi dresses she makes and I adore her hair too. Anyhoo, here are links to her two tutorials: tutorial 1 and answers to questions people had from tutorial 1.
I’ve made two so far and plan to make more. I’ve washed them both several times and they have held up well.
Here, in my own words, is why I love the 3D Mask so much. I also want you to see how it fits. I shortened the pattern so that it fits my face perfectly but plan on making one for Mark that will be about a half inch taller. The video also shows how I use t-shirt strips to make the ‘elastic’ that goes over your ears.
In conclusion, the pandemic isn’t gonna last forever. I feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Until then, I’ll be wearing my 3D Mask!
