The Vegetable Garden is Mostly Dead

by Kimberly Hickok

You Princess Bride fans know what I’m referring to. My garden isn’t all dead, just mostly dead. There IS a difference. Even though temps have dropped below freezing at night, this is what I picked Monday – NOVEMBER 1.

Swiss Chard, Butternut Squash, Broccoli, Green Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers & Tomatoes

I will definitely continue to harvest swiss chard, broccoli and cabbage.

This is the SECOND harvesting of cabbage. I’ve never had this happen before. I harvested the main head and this smaller head grew in its place. Creepy (but in a good way!).

To further extend the growing season, I use a cold frame. I have romaine growing in it right now.

An old single pane window hinged on top of a box. 2×12 boards, measured to fit the window are the base of the box.

The lettuce is about 8″ tall.

The cold frame is a mini greenhouse. In March I’ll start planting lettuce again. Here are directions for building your own cold frame.
