Pining for the Porch

by Kimberly Hickok

I’m not a whiner. I don’t complain about winter’s snow and cold. The longer, dark days do wear on me a bit but by now (mid-February), the days start to lengthen and the hope of warmer, longer and brighter days will be here in a few short weeks.

We’ve got big plans for our deck this year. We’re going to replace the existing deck and a 12′ x 16′ section will be screened in. Even though our deck looks like this right now . . .

We've had a very snowy winter. The snow is almost as high as the deck railing.

I’ve started to gather ideas about what I want to put in this space. On my wish list are a nice seating area, a retro-inspired wood burning fire feature and a table for eating or playing games.

I’m inspired by these spaces.

Love Love Love this table. Cover with a pretty table cloth to eat on but you can use it as a work surface too.

I’m struggling a little bit with keeping it as an outside space versus a room that’s more like an indoor, or three season, room. Right now I’m pretty sure that I want this to be more of an outdoor look and feel with a fire feature for ambience and to reduce the chill in the air.

Yup, before you know it spring will be here. I started a Pinterest board called Deck Ideas (I should probably rename it to Screened Porch Ideas) here.
