Flowers Make Me Smile

by Kimberly Hickok

I’m not sure what’s going on with Mother Nature right now but she seems to be in quite the mood. The unsettled weather patterns of April have extended into May and are continuing through June. For the last few weeks we’ve had rain just about every day accompanied by high winds, hail and tornado warnings. That is really unusual for upstate New York.

Right now I’m sitting at my desk watching the skies darken and lightning strikes from my office. This quick post is my way of brightening my day – literally! Last week I grabbed the camera and took a few shots of some of the flowers blooming in my yard.

Iris - 2

We have several Irises. This one blooms the earliest. They were here when we bought the house 7 years ago. I have no idea what kind of Iris it is. If you know, please leave a comment below.

These are planted around the mailbox. I adore the dark purple blooms.

Rose with spider

I’ve got two rose bushes. They are both ‘Simplicity’ roses. The ‘white’ one isn’t a bright white but more of a creamy white. They both bloom until we get a hard frost in the fall. Don’t worry, I make sure there are no spiders on any blooms I bring in the house.

This is the other 'Simplicity' rose. The blooms are a deep pink that's almost red. They add a nice pop of color to the landscape.

I’m not sure how long this weird weather pattern will last but I will continue to take time to smell the roses – even if I have to do it in between rain showers!
