Sew Your Own Bathing Suit Coverup

I’ve been driving myself crazy for two years looking for the perfect bathing suit cover up. I don’t think I’m asking for much. I want something that’s youthful and stylish. Something that isn’t see through, so that when my suit is damp I can just wear my cover up. Something that is is flirty and fun. How hard could it be???

Well it was super hard. I looked high and low and all I could find were shapeless coverups that just didn’t fill the bill. So after going from store to store and checking out my options, I decided to take matters into my own handsĀ and make my own!

My point is this – sometimes you have to think outside the box. Instead of looking for a bathing suit coverup pattern, I looked for a tunic pattern. I found a gauzy, 100% cotton fabric that would wash and wear easily.

Check it out -

I added some embellishment to the neckline to give it a little more pizzazz!

I used New Look pattern 6803 - the pattern cost less than $5. I needed about 2 1/2 yards of fabric. The fabric was $9.99/yard and was on sale for 50% off. By the time I added in the buttons for the embellishments, I paid $22. Not bad.

Total sewing time was 3 1/2 hours. That includes the time to cut out the pattern and sew on the buttons. I would consider this a pattern that requires intermediate sewing experience but there are lots and lots of patterns that require even less sewing ability.

So if you have a sewing machine that’s collecting dust, try a simple pattern like this to get you going.

  1. Great Job Kim! It looks wonderful on you, just right as a coverup.

It does seem hard to find “just right” clothes these days (either that or I am not fashionable). Kudos for taking the initiative to make your own.

  2. It is gorgeous and I might have you make me one!!! I have NO sewing experience. You look fab. Love the pics!!

  3. Kim, this is gorgeous! Reminds me that I’d better get back to the apron I’m sewing…

  4. I love that, Kim! Looks great on you!! I need one of those for relaxing on the boat!

  5. I forgot to mention which pattern view I used. It was D, a short tunic that you can also sew a belt for.

  6. I love this! I want to sew my own, too. Can you email me what fabric you used?

    Thanks so much!
